Weekly Mental Health Q&A

February 20, 2006

“All my life, I’ve had these secret “patterns” that I follow. When I walk up or down the stairs, I skip every other step. When I brush my teeth, I always do it in the same direction. These patterns have never been a problem in my past. But now that I’m in college and I’m under more stress, my patterns are starting to dominate my life. Now, if I accidentally break a pattern, I have to start over with whatever I’m doing. If I go down half a flight of stairs, and step on the “wrong step,” I have to go back up and start again. This has resulted in my being late for class a number of times. My roommate suggested that I see a counselor. Can someone at SCRS help me figure out how to deal with these patterns before they really start getting in the way of my life at school?”

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • Help you understand where these behaviors come from
  • Help you devise strategies for eliminating the necessity for these behaviors in your daily life
  • Talk with you about the possibility of seeing a psychiatrist for consultation about medication, if necessary
