Weekly Mental Health Q&A

January 30, 2005

“When I was growing up, I skipped ahead two grades, and was taking college level classes by the time I was in high school. My family and teachers were all really proud of me when I left for college at the age of 16. But now that I’m here, I’m worried that I’m not ready after all. It’s not so much that my classes are too hard, but more that I lack a certain amount of life experience. I’ve never dated, I’ve never lived far from my family, I’ve never been in an environment with alcohol, and I’ve never dealt with a lot of the issues that everyone around me is dealing with. I just don’t feel ready to be in a college environment. I’m scared to disappoint my family and everyone back home, but I think I’m going to have to change my situation. Can someone at SCRS help me figure out what to do?”

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • Help you explore whether these are natural adjustment issues, or whether, in fact, you aren’t yet ready for college
  • Support you in dealing with your parents’ reactions to your decision, if necessary
