"My roommate has dealt with depression throughout his life. He used to be on medication, but stopped taking it when he came to the U of C. His first two years here went smoothly, but this year he says he is falling back into depression. He really wants to go on medication again, because he had a lot of success with it in the past. But now that he’s in a serious relationship, he’s afraid that anti-depressants will have side-effects that might affect his sex-life. He’s very stressed by this situation, and worries that he’s going to have to choose between his mental well-being, and his relationship. Is there any way that someone at SCRS could help him figure out a way to balance both?"
HOW SCRS CAN HELP:
- help your roommate talk about his depression, its causes, and the kinds of help that are available
- help your roommate talk about his fears concerning how medication might affect his relationship
- refer him to an SCRS psychiatrist for a medication consultation, in which the psychiatrist can address any concerns or questions he may have about taking medication for depression, or the sexual side-effects of particular medications
