Weekly Mental Health Q&A

Monday, Jan. 3rd

“Although I'm having a great time at U of C, my home life fell apart over winter break. Just after I left to come back to school, my mother came out as a lesbian. She is leaving my father for a woman she works with. I have no problem with homosexuality, but I don't know how to be supportive of my mother while I'm still so angry at her for hurting my father. Because they're fighting, I feel like I can't be supportive of either parent without feeling like I'm being disloyal to the other. Could someone at SCRS help me figure out how to deal with my confusion about helping my parents?”

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • give you a space where you can talk about your feelings away from your family
  • help you to distinguish between your parents' needs and your own needs, and help you to avoid getting caught up in loyalty issues
  • help connect you with a support group at the university or in the community
  • help you find resources for your parents
  • offer to meet with both you and your parents
