Weekly Mental Health Q&A

Monday, June 13th

“I am having trouble concentrating on my work because I can't stop watching the news. How can I write papers about people who died hundreds of years ago, when people TODAY are dying from war, famine and disease? I feel so guilty for being so privileged, and sheltered. I feel like I should be out there helping people, and changing the world. But instead, I spend hours and hours getting stressed out about writing a paper that isn't going to help anyone anywhere. Can someone at SCRS help me figure out how to put things in perspective so that I can get my work done, and stop feeling so miserably guilty?”

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • provide a space in which to discuss this very real paradox and the ways in which what you are learning here can inform your actions in the future
  • help you strategize about how to address these concerns in ways that do not detract from your ability to do work for your classes

DISCLAIMER: None of the vignettes are based on actual University of Chicago students or specific incidents. The vignettes suggest possible scenarios but do not represent any particular University students. The SCRS maintains a strict confidentiality policy that is outlined our Policies section.
