Weekly Mental Health Q&A

Monday, May 16th

“My roommate's best friend from home committed suicide a few weeks ago. Apparently, he was a happy, healthy young man with everything going for him. My roommate has become obsessed with trying to figure out the reasons behind his friend's suicide, and whether there was something he could have done to prevent it. I'm worried about him, because he's falling behind in his work, and hasn't been attending classes. Would it be helpful for him to talk to someone at SCRS?”

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • provide a safe space in which he can talk about his feelings and reactions to his friend's suicide
  • help him to understand the nature of suicide, and that it is usually not a rational decision
  • help him to understand that no one can take responsibility for keeping someone else alive
