Weekly Mental Health Q&A

December 19, 2005

My girlfriend is physically abusive toward me. This may sound crazy, since I am a football player, and she is barely 5-feet tall. But when she gets angry, she hits me, punches me, and sometimes throws things at me. I have never threatened her physically, nor would I ever be violent toward her. And even though her violence doesn’t inflict a lot of physical pain, it really upsets me. Because of our differences is size, I don’t think she takes my concerns seriously. Could someone at SCRS help us to find ways to eliminate the violence from our relationship?

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • Help you both identify what factors trigger violence in your relationship
  • Help you both to recognize these triggers as they occur in the moment, and to deal with them in more constructive ways

DISCLAIMER: None of the vignettes are based on actual University of Chicago students or specific incidents. The vignettes suggest possible scenarios but do not represent any particular University students. The SCRS maintains a strict confidentiality policy that is outlined our Policies section.
