“I’m the first of my family to attend college,
and I was expecting them to be very supportive of my decision to continue with my education.
But since school has started, I’ve been having problems getting along with them. When I
talk about my successes at school, my family members accuse me of thinking that I’m better
than them. My father would have preferred that I follow in the family business. I don’t
know how to share this new part of my life with them without ending up feeling bad about myself.
Can someone at SCRS help me figure out how to better communicate with my family?
WHAT SCRS CAN DO:
- Provide you with support while you deal with your family’s responses to the path you are taking
- Help you to understand your family’s reactions
- Help you to communicate to your family what you’re experiencing in ways that will engage rather than threaten them
