Weekly Mental Health Q&A

Monday, September 12th

“Although I’ve found the U of C to be a very open-minded and accepting environment, I’m having a problem with a few people in my dorm. I’m a Muslim student, and there is a group of girls across the hall who practically run away whenever they see me coming. They look at my head coverings and give me strange looks. I thought I could handle their behavior, but this past week, they’ve started talking loudly near me about how ”those people want to blow us all up,’ and how “you can never tell who’s a suicide bomber.” They make me feel uncomfortable in my own dorm. If I hear them in the hall, I don’t come out of my room. Yesterday, I dreaded running into them so much that I actually missed a class. Is there someone at SCRS who could help me deal with this problem so that I can be comfortable in my dorm again?”

WHAT SCRS CAN DO:

  • provide you with a supportive space in which to discuss your situation and your responses to it
  • assist you in finding resources on campus that can help you deal with what you are experiencing
  • offer to meet with you and your resident heads to try to come up with solutions to your problem
