"I come from a very conservative religious background, and at first I was having a hard time adjusting to life at the U of C. Within the first week, I met people of all different races and religions, and even sexual orientations. Over the last few months, I've made many friends, and now I've started to question much of what I was brought up to believe. I love my family, but I'm starting to think that a lot of what they taught me was prejudiced, and ignorant. I feel like I can't tell them about my friends here, because I know they would disapprove. Could someone at SCRS help me figure out how to talk to my parents when I go home for Christmas Break, and bridge the gap between these two conflicting parts of my life?"
WHAT SCRS CAN DO:
- help you think through how to talk to your parents about the changes in your life since you've been away from home
- help you to deal with what may be a difficult but necessary part of becoming "your own person"
