Intake Appointment

Intake Appointment

At the first appointment, you will meet with a therapist to discuss your personal concerns and expectations from the counseling process. The therapist will perform an assessment and determine the services that can best assist you. These services include: psychotherapy, psychiatric consultation, academic skills assessment program, support groups, assessment and treatment for alcohol and other drug abuse, referrals, and emergency intervention.

If you have a physical disability, please inform the receptionist when calling for an intake appointment. Arrangements will be made for the student to be seen in a physically accessible location.

What to expect...in the intake appointment

You, the student, will complete a registration form immediately before meeting with a therapist who will conduct the intake session.  The registration form takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.  The intake session will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

During the intake session, you and the therapist will work together to clarify presenting problems.  The therapist will take a brief, but thorough, history with questions regarding: psychological and medical status, family history, any alcohol or other substance use, general well-being and experience with previous psychotherapy.

Due to scheduling and staff expertise, you may be scheduled to meet with a different therapist for short term therapy than the one who conducted the intake session.  If you prefer to continue working with the same therapist, you can request to do so.  SCS has a varied and comprehensive group of services.

Some presenting issues may be determined to require more time than is realistically available at a short term facility. The therapist will review other options such as long term therapy or specific programs available in the community.

Referrals outside SCS will necessitate the use of your private insurance plan or the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP).
